The Photographers Studio at Rock House

The Photographers Studio. A few weeks ago I was asked by Airbnb if I could go to the famous Rock House on Edinburgh’s Calton Hill. Built-in the 1700s, this property became famous when the Scottish painter David Octavius Hill and the photographer Robert Adamson resided there and produced 2500 calotypes (traditional photo prints basically). There are tonnes of history that you can read about online and it is fascinating but the whole site; Rock House, The Terrace Apartment and the Photographers Studio is absolutely stunning.

You can also read more about the ownership of Rock House and the Photographers Studio but I believe it was bought at some point in 2017 and the whole site is now being used as holiday rentals for Airbnb. Say what you will about Airbnb but in my opinion, you will not stay anywhere in Edinburgh (at least) more unique or more beautiful than either of the three apartments.

The Photographers Studio is really interesting to photograph. From the outside, it looks like a really small cottage, and when you enter you have a bathroom on the right and a bedroom right in front of you. I tried to move the bed for some symmetry but no chance, way too heavy for just me. Upstairs you have the kitchen and lounge but the room is entirely round which makes it really interesting to photograph. Normally with property photography, you find a corner or flat wall as a working point but not here despite the difference in light between inside and out (it is really dark) it was really easy to photograph.

So definitely something special. Hopefully have more really cool properties to share soon.

As mentioned this was photographed in Edinburgh but I have now moved to London. if you’re looking for a London property photographer, whether it be for photos, videos, floor plans, drone shots, VR tours, or a combination of some or all, please contact me here.
