Fonab Castle Hotel
It has been about a month since I last updated this blog and it’s not because of a lack of work but because I’ve been working through some larger projects recently with one being this hotel shoot at Fonab Castle Hotel.
For about 5 months starting October 2014 I worked for Oyster/Tripadvisor photographing hotels all around Scotland for their website. It was quite a lot of work and involved a lot of travelling and even though I no longer work with them for a multitude of reasons I’m now picking up some more work as a result of working for them.
One of the hotels I visited was the gorgeous 5-star Fonab Castle Hotel which sits just outside of Pitlochry in Perthshire. Pitlochry depending on how you drive is about 1 hour from Edinburgh but is surrounded by the most beautiful countryside and sits right on the banks of Loch Faskally which is an immensely popular location especially in the summer. In the summer they hold various events around the water and as well as the water there are numerous hill walks and activities going on in the area. Pitlochry itself is literally just a high street and row after row of hotels and bed and breakfasts.
About the hotel, the building was constructed in 1892 as a four story mansion and remained in private ownership until 1946 when the building was and became the headquarters of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board. Sometime after 1971 the house lay empty until it was bought and converted into a hotel for which it was reopened in 2012. The hotel originally provided just bedrooms and a brasserie but just opened early this year is an external spa (which is very nice btw) and a fine dining restaurant called Sandemans.
I was very gratefully fed on both days I worked at the hotel and had an opportunity to try some of the food in Sandemans and it’s really excellent. Beautiful to look at but most importantly delicious. I also tried the afternoon tea which I absolutely loved.
So over the course of two days I took photographs of the spa, the brasserie, Sandemans restaurant and some of the newly fitted rooms and it was great doing this kind of photoshoot. I still shoot weddings but with the ever changing photography industry I’ve found myself shifting more towards commercial work in recent times and it’s great to be able to do both weddings and commercial. They’re both technical in different ways, the clients are completely different and it keeps life exciting knowing that every day you’ll be working on a different kind of project.
Here is quite a decent selection of my favourite photos from Fonab Castle Hotel.
