London holiday home photographer. A new client, a new location, and a very interesting job today. Cool Stays contacted me about working together on properties as and when they pop up in Scotland. The first property they asked me to photograph was Portamaggie Cottage, which is located in Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway.
I photographed this holiday home while I was still living in Edinburgh and Stranraer from Edinburgh is a seriously long drive. On a good day it’s 3.5 hours away from Edinburgh but on the day I travelled over we were experiencing Storm Dudley. The couple that owned the property had hoped to stage a picnic area outside for photos and equally I would have loved to fly the drone there but the winds on the day were hitting 90mph so absolutely no chance. Apparently on a clear day you can see Ireland from the cottage and I’m sure if I flew the drone it would have ended up close to Ireland!
So this particular property, a family from Northumberland bought the cottage with a viewing to renting it out as a holiday let. Portamaggie Cottage has a single bedroom, is very cosy with lots of charm and with the right weather is in a really beautiful spot along the coast. I love the log fire, the conservatory is really warm and has great views and I believe on a clear day you can see Belfast. I had to go on a really specific date so there was no rescheduling for better weather, but thankfully even though the drive over was miserable, by the time I got there the weather had really cleared up and we had blue skies.
Sitting over Portamaggie Cottage is Killantringan Lighthouse, so once I had finished photographing the cottage, which took a couple hours, I drove up to the lighthouse, took some photos then headed home. In total I did around seven hours driving, got home 9pm (ish), took lots of photos and both Cool Stays and the owners were delighted with the photos.
