Carlton Terrace Airbnb

Something really interesting today. Now the Fringe Festival has arrived I’ve got less properties to photograph for Airbnb. Both June and July I photographed over 30 and this month while I have a few less I’ve seen a couple really god awful properties but also a couple really exceptional ones.

One exceptional property that really stood out for a number of reasons was on Carlton Terrace, which is a really affluent street which leads on from Royal Terrace which itself has a really nice hotel and a Michelin starred restaurant 21212 (never been, don’t do Michelin star). But Carlton Terrace is especially cool as it sits on one end of Calton Hill. I never knew until I visited this property that half of Calton Hill, which is an immensely popular destination for tourists is privately owned by the residents around Calton Hill. So Alistair, who’s property I visited, was kind enough to show me around what’s called Regent Gardens and the surrounding and immensely charming Carlton Terrace Mews.

Now I really like Mews style properties, I find them extremely charming an if I could find one big (and affordable) enough and in the right location I’d love to live in one, so it was worth visiting just to check out the mews. So what became and what should have been arrive, grab a key from the keybox job, 30 minutes photos and gone, ended up turning into a 2.5 hour trip into a very cool location and the opportunity to learn about the area.

As I said to Alistair, who works in IT and is an genuinely awesome chap, I could spend a day photographing Regent Gardens. In Regent Gardens there’s a play area, tennis court, swings and the most fascinating part is when you reach the path at the top, if you unlock and go though a bloody great big door and wall (don’t even think about trying to get in unless your name is Spiderman) it takes you out just meters from the monuments on top. How cool!

But back to the property, Alistair’s property is a one bedroom but beautifully styled Victorian tenement. All of the rooms are huge but the bathroom and kitchen looked especially awesome. The kitchen was a real surprise as I’m used to visiting dozens of properties with the most basic appliances (cheapest of the cheap kettle) for example. Alistair really clearly cares about his property and his invested in Kitchen Aid, Sage appliances etc. Very impressive!

I’ve written quite a lot but this for me was an immensely fascinating visit and another final interesting fact (for me at least) about the property is it used to be lodgings for the health service. When the government owned the buildings it housed nurses but at some point the building was sold and turned into apartments.
